Dick Cheney with a pellet gun

Dick Cheney accidentally shot someone in the face this weekend.

Key word: accidentally.

I don’t think any sane person would believe otherwise. Perhaps with naïveté I declare: it would be stupid for the vice president to purposefully shoot anyone anywhere.

Still, heated arguments and exploitation arise from this debacle, as NBC's David Gregory, one of White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's most persistent inquisitors over the last year, raised his voice while asking a question about the incident yesterday. The news conference began with McClellan pitching the merely good state of the economy and the reporters didn’t seem to care; none of their questions were about the economy.

Didn’t you know? This lawyer guy, Whatshisname, is suffering at the hands of the vice president. Suff-er-ing.

“Indeed, the absence of true grief is what makes it possible to wallow in vicarious grief. The media understand and exploit this. People are product,” says Michael Kelly in his 1999 editorial for the Washington Post.

Yet, we have room for humor at the hands of this suffering Whotheheck. ABC’s Tuesday morning headline: “Vice President Shoots Man, Hilarity Ensues,” accompanied by the tired picture of Cheney snarling. How funny, relevant, and so deserving of the top spot on the Google News front page.

The latest development: The State of Texas issued a warning citation to Cheney for breaking Texas hunting law by failing to buy a $7 stamp allowing him to shoot upland game birds. Without a doubt, we’d have no idea of this development if not for mainstream media dictating what we should care about. Whittinghuh?

So, how’s the economy? Wait! Here comes Cheney with a pellet gun!
